How to Use a Fire Extinguisher
Different types of fire extinguishers are suitable for different types of fires. For example, a water
extinguisher should never be used on an electrical fire. That said, most fire extinguishers operate the
same way… using something called the P-A-S-S technique.
First… PULL the pin. When in place, the pin keeps the handle from being depressed. Once you pull
the pin, make sure the extinguisher works by giving the trigger a quick squeeze. This will also show you
how far the stream travels.
Next, AIM. Approach the fire standing at a safe distance and aim the nozzle or outlet towards the base
of the fire.
Then, SQUEEZE. Squeezing the handles together discharges the extinguishing agent. Releasing the
handles stop the discharge.
Lastly, SWEEP. Move the nozzle from side to side at the base of the fire until the flames are
extinguished. Keep in mind… fire extinguishers are only meant to handle small fires… and always call
the fire department to make sure the fire is completely out.
