Returning to Normal After a Fire
A house fire can change your life in ways that you can’t even imagine. A fire can cause serious damage,
regardless of whether you live in an apartment, a single-family, or a multi-family home.
The building’s structure and your personal belongings may have been badly damaged by flames, heat,
smoke and water – so anything you’d like to save or re-use will need to be carefully cleaned.
Firefighters may have had to cut holes in walls to look for hidden flames. They may have even had to cut
holes in the roof to let out heat and smoke. Obviously, fixing this damage will take time and patience.
It is important to understand the risks to your health and safety even after the fire is out. The soot and
dirty water left behind can contain things that could make you sick… so be very careful about touching
any fire-damaged items.
Before you start to clean or make repairs, seek advice from the fire department, local building officials,
your insurance agent and restoration specialists.
